Properties that have commercial operations, homeowners associations, and rental properties often have different site uses and management needs for their trees. Along with the desire for attractive properties and receiving the benefits from the trees, risk management is a high priority. Trees are usually the largest infrastructure investment on properties after the structures. Large trees are not easily replaced. Trees also can present a risk that may not be well-managed.

Commercial services are provided in a manner that considers the use and risk on the site, needs of the trees, and available budget. STC’s ISA Certified Arborists will visit the site, perform a simple inventory and help develop a multi-year management plan that maintains the trees in an acceptable risk and condition. We help you understand the needs of your trees and formulate our programs to your budget.

Often, the landscape maintenance contractor working on a site is unaware of the irrigation needs and proper maintenance practices for the trees on the site. Unintentionally, they may mis-prune, over or under irrigate, or bury tree trunks with soil, mulch, or groundcover. We prefer to coordinate with your landscape maintenance operations to improve the environment the trees are growing in and save you money over the life of your trees.

Our ISA Certified Arborist will visit your site, perform a visual assessment, and provide a free estimate for the care of your trees.

The typical services include:

  • Site inspection and review of tree population

  • Develop multi-year management plan

  • Tree pruning to ANSI A300 National Tree Industry Standards

  • Stump grinding

  • Tree removal – small or large

  • Root crown excavation and examination

  • Aerial examinations

  • Annual and multi-year tree service contracts

  • Tree planting

We generate a lot of wood chips during our tree care operations. Wood chips serve as excellent mulch and soil cover. Natural wood chips break down over time and deliver organic matter to the soil improving soil texture and structure. Wood chip mulch over soil can reduce compaction of soil. If you would like to receive a load of wood chips, please call our office.

Our homes are usually the biggest, most important investments we make. A well-maintained landscape is important to the look of our homes, and trees are the biggest, longest lasting, least replaceable feature of most landscapes.

Residential services are provided for owner occupied properties with the intent to assist in the management of the trees on your property. Some properties have one or two significant trees. Some properties have many trees. Trees may vary for their importance and benefits to a specific site ranging from shade, screening, framing views, air quality, stormwater interception, and landscape features. Our mission at STC is to provide the services to help your trees grow to contribute to your property. Large trees take a long time to grow and are not easily replaced. We just can’t replace a large tree by planting a new tree.

Managing Trees – Tree Maintenance

All trees require regular maintenance. Regular doesn’t have to be every year or every other year. Maintenance includes pruning as well as a plant care program to increase overall health and vigor; and manage disease and pest thresholds. Young tree care can be performed by properly trained people with hand pruners, hand saws, and pole tools. However, the care must be done properly to industry standards, regardless of tree size. More tree structure is damaged with hand pruners and loppers than chain saws. Correctly pruning young trees is probably the best investment that can be made, and will reduce many future expenses and unplanned failures.

When trees become larger, they are more difficult to work on, generate a larger amount of debris, branches can be heavy and large, and require the skills to climb and perform proper work to industry standards. Continuously pruning trees for structure, risk management, and pest and disease control are part of the commitment to living among trees.

A plant health care program and regular structural pruning is essential for young and established trees. This will establish a crown that will be free of critical defects and less likely to lose large limbs as the tree grows larger. We perform our pruning to industry standards and develop the objective and outcome with you for the reason we are caring for your trees. We then perform the work in a high quality manner and respect your property.

Please let us provide a proposal for caring for your trees. We will train you and your landscaper in young tree care practices. Contact us at SCT Tree Care, Inc. and our ISA Certified Arborist will visit your site and we’ll help you care for your trees.

Managing Risk

Most things in life involve some risk. Living with and near trees has inherent risks. Branches can break, roots can heave, and wood can decay, all creating the potential for tree part or whole tree failure which can cause injury or property damage. The only way to eliminate risk related to trees is to remove all trees. That is not a desirable solution in our Sacramento region climate. The next best thing to no risk is to practice managed risk.

We inspect your trees for health, structure, and failure potential. Most inspections are visual and can be performed on the existing site and tree. We review the site and circumstances and provide care options to reduce the risk associated with your trees, which can vary from improving health, to pruning, to removal.

In some instances soil, plant growth, or improvements need to be removed to view the necessary tree parts to assess structure and wood quality. In these situations, either you can perform the access and we can inspect, or we can perform the access and inspection as you prefer.

Selecting Trees to Plant

STC promotes selecting the Right Tree for the Right Place for the Right Purpose. Step 1 – why are we planting the tree? What do we want the tree to do – shade, stormwater interception, screen, frame, leaf or fall color, flowers, fruit, or aesthetics? Once we answer that question, we already have an idea of some of the trees that will serve that purpose. Next we look at the place – how much room is available both above and below ground to accommodate tree growth. In new designs, we may be able to adjust the space to meet the needs of the trees we want to plant. In existing sites, the amount of space may be fixed or very costly to adjust. We have to match the tree with the available space, or it will not be a sustainable planting. Lastly, we select the best trees for that space to do what we want in the space we have.

Tree Inventory

A more detailed site inspection provides an inventory of all the trees on the site, or the population of trees on a site desired by the tree owner. The inventory data covers as wide a range as the clients prefer.

The basic range of attributes include:

  • Individual tree number

  • Location either written description or approximate placement on a map

  • Tree species and common name

  • Trunk diameter

  • Tree vigor (health)

  • Tree structure

  • Significant diseases

  • Comments describing significant observations

  • Mitigation options to reduce risk, improve health, or improve structure
